The forestry enterprise  was  established in 1936 on the basis of Orsha timber industry enterprise’s forests composed of Vysoksky, Shcherbinsky, Orshansky, Dneprovsky, Dubrovensky and Kopyssky forestries,  covering a total area of 46675 hectares.

Characteristics of the company

1. Location

The enterprise is located in the South-Eastern part of Vitebsk region on the territory of four districts: Orsha (53.9%), Dubrovensky (45.6%) of  Vitebsk region (0.3%), Shklov (0.2%) and Gorki  of Mogilev region. The forestry extent  from North to South is 62 km and from East to West – 71 km.

4. Territory organization

Orsha forestry enterprise  was  established in 1936 on the basis of Orsha timber industry enterprise’s forests composed of Vysoksky, Shcherbinsky, Orshansky, Dneprovsky, Dubrovensky and Kopyssky forestries,  covering a total area of 46675 hectares.

The first forest management was conducted  in 1936, then in 1950, 1961, 1973, 1983, 1993, 2006 respectively.

 Number  of  forestries changed  in the process of the their development, at present  their  number is reflected in the table above.  Besides, the area of  forestry enterprise was constantly growing  at the expense of  the forest  lands passed from agriculture enterprises and some other owners.

5. Hydrography and hydrological conditions.

The forestry is located on the territory of  the  Dnieper and  the Zapadnaya  Dvina  basins. ( the Black Sea and the Baltic Sea   basins).

The length of the river Dnieper within  the forestry  is 90 km. The river channel is meandering, with smooth curves abounds in riffles and shallows. The river slots ridges of Devonian limestones forming Kobelyakskie rock ledges close by v.Pridneprovie, 9 km to the north of Orsha city. The river  is from 60 to 120 metres wide within the forestry. Annual average water consumption of Orsha city is 123 m3/s. There are recreation camps, holiday villages SOTs on the riverside. Timber floating  isn’t executed. The Dnieper to the South of Orsha was navigable  before.

There are 14 lakes on the territory of the forestry, the biggest of them are Bolshoe Orehovskoe 2.11 km2,1080 m. wide; Devinskoe 2.0 km2, 600 m. wide; Kazennoe 1.18 km2, 520 m. wide. Lake Kazennoe – 3.5 m, Kurovshchina -3.2 m, Afanasefskoe – 3.1 m. have the inmost average depths. There are 35 rivers flowing  on the territory of all the forestries.

6. Natural and climatic conditions.

The territory of  Orsha forestry  belongs to the zone of mixed forests.

The climate of the district is temperate warm with marked continentality. Steady snow cover (120 -130 days) 1st decade of December - 1st decade of April is the most long-lasting  in the country. The average height of snow cover in protected places is 45 cm, in open area is 25-30 cm. Average depth of soil freezing is 50 cm, maximum - 70-80 cm. The average duration of snowmelt is 20 days. Natural and climatic conditions are favourable  for growing spruce, oak, pine, ash, maple, birch, aspen , alder and other tree species.

7. Relief of the soil.

The forestry is located on Orsha upland and  on western side of Smolensk upland. The highest point on Smolensk upland  is  v. Narejkovo  229 m.

 There are swamps in addition to the uplands  and the hills. The largest is Osinovskoye, located in the Dubrovensky and partly in Orsha districts. The area of the swamps is  5.4 thsd. ha. Industrial peat deposit is located on the area of 3.2 thsd. ha, with the average depth of 2.2 m.

8. Transport routes

There are  series of railways and highways of interstate, national, regional and local status. There are 18  broad-gauge railways of them, 858 – roadways, including 816 forestry, 37 of public service ones.
